It would be an understatement to say that we’ve missed them. After nine long years without a single release, last year the three New Yorkers finally gave us a follow-up to Mosquito (their fifth album, released in 2013). Like a mantra to restore calm, it’s called Cool It Down, and (at least on the surface) this new chapter produced by the vastly talented David Sitek is imbued with a previously unseen serenity. Cosmic synths and sober piano get the upper hand over the raging riffs that they built their reputation on. But don’t worry – Karen O has not yet had her final word. Her lyrics are just as cutting as ever and alongside bandmates Nick Zinner and Brian Chase, she lets the full force of her fury explode on stage during their cataclysmic performances.
