“Are you ready to cry and dance with me?”, asks Tove Lo mischievously on YouTube in the statement of intent that accompanies the video of No One Dies from Love, hit single from her fifth album Dirt Femme, released last October. The question from this Scandinavian singer songwriter can be understood as a nod to her reputation as a pop star, or “Sweden’s darkest pop export” as she was described by Rolling Stone when her first album Queen of the Clouds (2014) was released. It’s true that her sound is characterised by uncompromising lyrics reminiscent of a personal diary, juxtaposed with a fusion of dance, electropop and synthpop melodies. Responsible for her own repertoire, Tove Lo has also distinguished herself by writing songs for others, notably Lorde and Dua Lipa.
