Nantes native Ana Benabdelkarim showed her true colours by taking her stage name from a David Bowie song: she too would become an intrepid artist pushing back the frontiers of pop music, questioning the notion of gender and flourishing on stage. After a stint as a singer with Pégase, she’s continued her journey as a virtuoso solo artist releasing a charming debut EP (But You Will, 2018), followed by a piercingly beautiful album (Breakup Songs, 2021), which earned her a French Victoires de la musique awards nomination and the next album is due this spring. The meticulous search for the aesthetic on the first two songs from this new album, I Don’t Look Good When I Cry and Widow Dreams Forever, mark her out as the French version of Charli XCX, Lorde and Lana Del Rey.
