Anton Newcombe described this native of France’s Quiberon as the “French Nick Cave” when they worked together as part of the band L’Epée. As ever, the leader of The Brian Jonestown Massacre is totally right. Among the many things they have in common, first and foremost is their firmly established love of words that’s led them to write several novels. A close second is the deep timbre of their immediately recognisable voices. Next is their rich musical repertoire, punctuated by soundtracks and studio albums that condense all their singer-songwriter obsessions – which for the French fiftysomething means folk, blues, chanson, rock and just a soupçon of electro, as his most recent album, Tambour Vision (2022), attests. Finally, it’s impossible not to compare the sheer class that makes these two gentlemen extremely charismatic on stage.
